Dr. Tilles and Dr. Mudd are private eye doctors you can trust for state-of-the-art vision and eye health care in a friendly, modern office. For more professional information, visit "Our Practice" and "Our Services". Dr. Barry Tilles
Dr. Barry Tilles is a 1973 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park where he received his Bachelor of Science in Zoology. He graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1977 where he completed an externship at the Optometric Center of Maryland. Upon completion, he remained at the Optometric Center and specialized in off-sight vision care. There he practiced in various satellite clinics including nursing homes, the Baltimore City Jail and various schools for the mentally disabled. It was perhaps this experience that taught Dr. Tilles the value of patience and the skill in examining the challenging patient. He operated a private practice in Lanham, MD from 1980 through 1994, but longed to practice in the community he lived. Looking for his final stop in 1994, Dr. Tilles created Peepers Family Eyecare, a full scope optometric office fusing the flavor of general practice with the latest technology. Specializing in hard to fit contact lenses, Dr. Tilles has been involved in various phases of study in such contacts as bifocals and astigmatic lenses. He also has extensive experience in LASIK and cataract co-management. His experience is best conveyed by his colorful 30 years in practice. He is a member if the International Society of Refractive Surgery, Maryland Optometric Association and American Optometric Association. Dr. Tilles has a love affair with optometry. He has nurtured his practice as he did his children and has been blessed to watch it (and them) flourish. He has even had the personal satisfaction of watching two of his former patients, his son, Dr. Mudd and his niece become optometrists. Born and raised in Baltimore, Dr. Tilles loves to follow the Orioles and University of Maryland Terps fight through their up and down seasons. He most enjoys trying to keep up with his wife Cathy, as she tries to fill his free time with exercise and travel.
Dr. Shawn Mudd
Dr. Shawn Mudd is a recent graduate of optometry school, however his experience spans over 12 years. As a high school student at Severn School, Dr. Mudd learned every aspect of Peepers since its' birth in 1994. His mentor and father, Dr. Tilles was a great educator. While attending Boston University, he worked in surfacing labs manufacturing glasses and as a technician in optometric and ophthalmological practices. Dr. Mudd graduated Boston University in 2002 Magna Cum Laude with a major in Psychology and minor in Biology. He was awarded membership in Golden Key National Honor Society with research experience in psychopharmacology and visual perception. Having attended the SUNY College of Optometry in New York, NY, Dr. Mudd graduated on Dean's List with experience in student government. New York's patient base provided diverse experience in low vision, pediatrics, vision therapy, contact lens, LASIK, ocular disease and primary care. His first rotation was at the National Naval Military Center Eye Clinic in Bethesda, MD with experience in low vision, contact lens, ocular disease, primary care and LASIK. He finished his studies at the Veteran's Hospital in Baltimore, which is one of the busiest veteran's eye clinics in the country. During that time, he gained extensive knowledge in ocular disease including glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. He also served as a member of Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity and attended an eye care mission in the Peruvian Amazon. He is an active member of the Maryland Optometric Association and American Optometric Association. Dr. Mudd has found a home in a narrow Federal Hill brownstone and is loving it. You may see him meandering to an Orioles game when the weather is nice or taking a jog through the Inner Harbor. You'll see him cheering for the Ravens or Terps basketball regardless of the weather. He also appreciates contemporary art and has hopes for a successful collection. When he's not at work or in Baltimore, you never know where you will find Dr. Mudd as he is an avid traveler and has a life plans to visit a new country every year. So, be sure to give advice if you have recently taken a great trip or chat about sports if you aren't a Steelers, Yankees or Duke fan!
